Marijuana, known to humankind for centuries, exhibits both psychoactive and therapeutic properties. The plant Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica, reaching up to 5 meters in height under natural conditions, blooms from late summer to late autumn. The first mentions of cannabis come from Chinese records dated to 2800 BCE. This plant grows wild in many regions of Asia, and its origin is often associated with India. Many indigenous communities around the world have used marijuana for religious, recreational, and medicinal purposes.

Medical Applications

Today, marijuana finds applications in medicine. Many doctors prescribe cannabinoid-containing drugs to patients suffering from conditions such as glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, AIDS, and cancer. Studies indicate that marijuana can have a positive effect on heart function, similar to the effects of regular physical exercise.

Risks and Side Effects

Despite its potential health benefits, marijuana is classified as a narcotic in many countries and is subject to legal restrictions. Withdrawal symptoms, including aggressive behavior, have been observed in individuals addicted to marijuana. Long-term marijuana use can lead to psychological addiction, similar to anabolic steroids. However, it’s worth noting that research suggests marijuana users are less likely to turn to hard drugs.

Marijuana smoke contains over 400 chemical compounds, with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) being the main psychoactive ingredient. Excessive exposure to marijuana smoke can negatively affect blood pressure and lead to fainting. People with cardiovascular diseases, heart conditions, and schizophrenia should avoid marijuana entirely, even secondhand smoke. Regular marijuana smoking increases the risk of lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchitis.

Forms of Marijuana

Marijuana comes in various forms, including dried herb (known as “weed,” “grass,” or “marijuana”) and hashish (cannabis resin). Hashish, ranging in color from green to brown, is obtained from cannabis buds. Hashish oil, a concentrated form of resin, is classified as a Class A drug in the UK, alongside cocaine and heroin.

Statistics

Studies show that approximately 46% of individuals aged 14-30 have had contact with marijuana, and half of them have returned to using it. In the United States, marijuana smoking is more popular than internet use. In the UK, 78% of people arrested for drug offenses were carrying marijuana.
